Programming a mobile rpg in unity3d (its actually just unity2d seeing as i am not using any 3d features… so lets just call it unity πŸ˜› )

I took out the pokemon sprites as i prefer to keep my projects 100% legal, even if its just a prototype or early alpha build… So the updated version contains new enemy sprites… more representative of the final product πŸ™‚

The plan is to make this game an android mobile game that you can play during a short break or whenever you feel like it. So it will not have Energy or other annoying timelimiting mechanics.

I do however plan on monetizing the game through voluntary ads where the player is rewarded for watching an ad and then in turn gains a buff or a bonus for X amount of rounds vs enemies , or just plain x amount of enemies fought πŸ™‚

More updates coming in the near future. I havent made a video of it yet, but the game currently has different zones to battle enemies in, and a village where you will be able to buy/sell items at the blacksmith, heal up at the temple and respec/retrain at the Trainer πŸ™‚

Tastygraph signing off! See you soon, thanks for reading πŸ™‚

Rise my minion! *Tastygraph casts a resurrection spell on this blog*

Hi everyone…

it has been ages…

years in fact…

and for that I apologize (Lets face it, its not like you were holding your breath, waiting for a new update… if so… then… yikes, I hope this resurrection spell affects you too then, my poor zombie friend πŸ˜‰ )

So what does a Tastygraph do in about 4 years?

We’ll I’ve worked hard at becomming better at programming.

I’ve practiced my 2d drawing skills and managed to save up money for a Wacom Cintiq13HD drawing tablet, bought a spanking new supercomputer and a whole bunch of other things(tm)…

Been promoted at work to now be a part time school teacher as well, so I am in charge of planning and teaching the computer science classes for the 5th graders (the only grade that is taught computer science at this school)

I’ve managed to release a few games on my Kongregate PageΒ and I have also started livestreaming my game development sessions which you’ll be able to watch on my Twitch Channel (its like a television program where you watch whats happening on my screen while im explaining what I am doing πŸ™‚ )

And lastly I have also been posting updates to the Tastygraph Game Development group over on facebook πŸ™‚

oh… and as a little visual proof of concept, so you can see that I havent been completely slacking off! Here’s a video of what my super mario / meatboy and zelda2 inspired 2d platformer currently looks like πŸ™‚ (This is after 2 months of work)

I am in the process of signing up for an online class on game development by the WalkerBoyStudio at www.walkerboystudio.com

One of the steps for it involves taking a personality test (and answering truthfully, of course πŸ˜‰ ) so I figured I would post the result here πŸ™‚

INFP – “Questor”. High capacity for caring. Calm and pleasant face to the world. High sense of honor derived from internal values. 4.4% of total population.

Introverted (I) 55.26% Extroverted (E) 44.74%

yay, new blogpost and it hasnt even been a full year yet?! Holy crap, something fishy is afoot! … err… jokes aside, I’ve just been feeling very productive lately, and here is the picture to show it πŸ™‚

the new retro style graphics for Twitch Defense

Twitch Defense has really changed a lot visually in the past few days… I decided to go for a sort of modern graphics meets retro style… not really sure how to describe it… I made the sprites in a regular Pixel art style, 16 by 16 pixels, and then applied a few layer styles in photoshop to give it that sort of glowy look to it.

All in all i think it suits the game quite well, let me know what you think ? and give the game a go as well! Wont be long before I can start adding more varied enemies and a couple of new powerups πŸ™‚

yep! Twitch Defense has an upgrade button at last πŸ™‚

currently you can access the upgrade system after you’ve played through the game (aka died… as there is currently no win criteria.. but i am considering making it so that you can select between Infinite Mode and 60 Second mode. But ill see about that πŸ™‚

remember, its still an early work in progress, but im working on it on a daily basis… when rl doesnt butt in πŸ˜›

to those curious, it was made with StencylWorks, a pretty easy to use, yet advanced flash game creation program πŸ™‚

please post comments and let me know what you think about Twitch Defense in its current form… and also, I am very much interested in hearing what ideas on game design you might have πŸ™‚

yeah… what the title says πŸ˜‰

I want to try embedding a flash game in the blog.

http://www.stencyl.com/game/embed/6462

but darnit… iframe tags dont seem to work for me… ah well πŸ˜› leaving the blog post up anyways πŸ™‚ Enjoy!

added a bunch of new graphics and sound effects to Twitch Defense… tweaked the values on the Bonus Object, and i am currently working on adding in an upgrade system that allows you to remove and add bonuses to your player…

for example: removing some of the negatives from shooting bonus objects…

increasing the combo value when bumping into bonus objects

faster bullets

more bullets (currently 1 is the max)

more health in the form of a shield that can take 1 or more hits, depending on upgrade level.

check it out atΒ http://www.stencyl.com/game/play/6462Β and remember, its still a work in progress demo πŸ™‚

I’ve started work on a mini/prototype game and reached a point now with Stencyl where I am actually able to put together a semi-decent gameplay prototype in less than a day πŸ™‚

Its pretty neat being able to whip up a couple of placeholder graphics in photoshop and filterforge, and then put it all together in Stencyl to test out the basics of the gameplay and mechanics for a game idea. I highly recommend trying out Stencyl for prototyping if you’re looking for something to help speed up the process for when you’re making proof of concept for a client or what not πŸ™‚

Twitch Defense (super early work in progress demo)

You control the object at the center of the screen, and your goal is to survive for as long as possible. Shoot the incoming red enemies by pressing the arrow keys in the direction of the enemies.

Dont shoot the green bonus objects, that will give you a negative score… but letting the bonus object hit you, will grant you a big positive score.

I plan on adding an upgrade menu that allows the player to unlock and upgrade new bonuses and features as they play the game more.

hi all, long time no post… same old, same old πŸ˜›

http://www.kongregate.com/games/Mushizo/invader-avoider

is my latest game, which… really isnt much of a game, but more of a test in using one of the best/fastest/free’est game development tools out there… www.stencyl.com πŸ™‚

I was at the annual obligatory (aka, you must attend, or you’ll be fired!) Summer Camp with my work… 5 days of no interwebz, getting paid 10 hours for a 24 hour workday… surrounded by screaming hyperactive kids that have been injected with ridiculously high amounts of sugar in every fucking meal! (thanks boss, you really know how to feed kids properly… but thats an entirely different story πŸ˜› )

Anyways… im stuck at this thing… brought my laptop… and decided to make a little game to kill time during the extremely late hours of the night (seemingly my only moment of solitude/freedom on the entire trip… is when everyone is asleep and im not πŸ™‚ )

it took about 1Β½-2 hours or so… and then a few more hours here and there to tweak the gameplay (if you can call it that… )

Its basically a super simple avoidance game where you control the character with the arrow keys, avoid the randomly flying red alien heads while trying to manouver over and pick up the hastily scribbled powerup icon to boost your score πŸ™‚

In other news… I am now kind of torn between the ease and flash… (and the potential for iPhone game development on a PC platform for a price) of Β www.stencyl.comΒ  …

and the super power, 3d and 2d capabilities, multiplatform (for a price) and huge amounts of SERIOUS users of www.unity3d.com

Both programs are great for someone like me, but in the end, i think that Β www.stencyl.comΒ  is a better program for me, in my current “level” of game-designer… I’m better at focusing my attention to finishing a super easy , super quick game… and for that, StencylWorks is awesome πŸ™‚

Dont get me wrong, www.unity3d.com is terrific for that as well, but its somewhat faster to develop with Stencyl, compared to Unity3d… for me.

anyways… loads of blah blah this time… check out the game to get a feel for what is possible with Stencyl in a very limited amount of time πŸ™‚

Hi all,

Figured it was time to show a little somewhat buggy sneak peek of an arena shooter set in space that I am currently working. (read: Currently pulling my hair out because SOMETHING just wont do what I want it to πŸ˜›

http://www.tastygraph.com/sb

This test is NOT a proper indication of how the game will play when its finished. All the graphics will be replaced, and Joshua from http://www.openheartsound.com is working on the Music and Sound Effects for the game (I’ve added a few of his sounds to the game already (the laser shot, the upgrade sound and the pick up Ore sound… and damn, is he good!! )

also, in the final version of the game, you wont be fighting all enemy types from the get go… it will slowly ramp up the difficulty as you upgrade your ship and kill more enemies.

as always, the game requires the Unity3d Plugin to play in your browser, luckily its a super fast download and no hassle install πŸ™‚

Just wanted to share a little something, to show that I’m not completely inactive πŸ˜‰
